Evan Sachs, he/him or ze/zer, is a copy editor by day and health-justice advocate by night. A proud member of JFREJ (Jews for Racial and Economic Justice) and ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), Sachs is a happily neurospicy “cat dude” who lives in Upper Manhattan with his three cats. He is passionate about educating others on the realities of the ongoing COVID pandemic, including best practices to mitigate spread. In 2024, while putting together a presentation on the subject for his JFREJ neighborhood group, he realized just how few pandemic resources were available north of 125th Street in Manhattan. So in February 2025, he founded the Washington Heights/Inwood Mask Bloc to help his neighbors access free COVID tests and high-quality masks.
Sachs misses getting involved in theater the way he did in the “before times” and during the slightly earlier days of the pandemic, when more theater-makers were active in keeping their cast and crew safe. Just ask him about his circus days — or the time he (safely!) lit himself on fire in the middle of a forest. That said, he is grateful to be surrounded by so many good people who fight for justice and equality every day. Organizing around mask rights, ongoing pandemic needs, and other health-justice issues keeps Sachs busy outside of his day job, and he is constantly learning from and growing with his fellow activists.
